2021 Chevy Silverado: Towing & Performance Features

Robustly Powerful Towing Capabilities
It’s no secret that the 2021 Chevy Silverado turns heads as an attractive and rugged light-duty pickup truck. But, there’s more than meets the eye with the newest Silverado. Chevy put a powerful and fuel-efficient engine under the hood, and with a few tweaks, the manufacturer was able to add more towing capability than previous year’s models.

Fuel-Efficient Engine Options
Chevy offers several engines on the 2021 Silverado; most are available with 2-wheel and 4-wheel drivetrains. The most fuel-efficient combination is the 2-wheel drive, Duramax 3.0-liter Turbo-Diesel I-6 engine, which gets an EPA-estimated 23 MPG city and 33 MPG highway. This engine is also available on all 4-wheel drive options, except the regular cab with a long bed.

The other engine options include a 2.7-liter Turbo, a 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6, and a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8. The largest engine, 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8, is only available on FWD double cabs and crew cabs. For comparison, the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 gets and EPA-estimated 16 MPG city and 21 MPG highway.

Towing More Than Ever Before
The available engine options give buyers serious towing capabilities. With 2-wheel drive, the 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel can tow up to 9500 pounds. With 4-wheel drive, the 6.2-liter V8 EcoTec can handle towing up to 12,100 pounds with the Max Trailering Package. The 5.3 V8 will tow up to 11,000 pounds, also with the Max Trailering Package.

The new towing capabilities are an upgrade from the 2020 model year Silverado. At a minimum, all 2021 Chevy Silverado models will tow a minimum of 9,500 pounds. The 2021 models have nearly a ton more towing capacity than the 2020 models. With the Max Trailering Package on the Silverado 1500, the light-duty trucks rival the trailering capabilities of the Silverado 2500.

New Tech To Complement The Added Towing Abilities
Along with the improved towing abilities, the 2021 Chevy Silverado also has tech options that make towing safer. Chevy added Jack-Knife Alert to warn drivers if their trailer is about to jackknife while in reverse. Another novel tech addition that makes lane changes safer is the Trailer Length Indicator that lets drivers see a red overlay in the blind-spot camera view.

Another tech enhancement is the Cargo Bed View with Cargo Bed Zoom View and Bed Hitch Guidance. These enhancements let drivers see the view from the hitch as they back up to meet their trailers.

What’s In The Max Trailering Package?
Buyers who choose the Max Trailering Package get a Silverado with added power and performance. This package adds an upgraded rear axle, rear leaf springs, shock tuning, and brake controller. It also comes with a 220-amp alternator and a radiator with enhanced cooling capabilities.
